I don’t know about you, but I love the fall. I can’t get enough of the changing leaves, the crispness of the air and the nostalgic smells. Unfortunately, this time of year can leave many pet owner’s with itchy dogs, spear grass and mats that seem to have come out of nowhere! A bit of rain can turn a dog’s coat from tangles to mats in no time at all. My advice is to thoroughly brush and comb your dog’s coat before they get wet. This should mostly eliminate the forming of mats making it easy to do a quick brush once the coat has dried.
As for itchiness, a lot of dogs do get seasonal skin irritation around this time and the best thing to do is have them bathed in a nice anti-itch or medicated shampoo. Always check your dog’s feet for spear grass! This little sprig can cause huge problems if it gets into your dog so try to avoid dry grassy areas right now such as Mount Doug.
